BOWEN ISLAND

Designing The Next Chapter

Perched on a scenic lot with sweeping views, this new build on Bowen Island was designed for a couple of recent empty nesters looking to create a home that evolves with them. From flexible spaces to future-proofed systems, this home blends thoughtful architecture, sustainability, and intentional design from the ground up.

Concept Design

This three-bedroom home was created with adaptability and longevity in mind. Two of the bedrooms serve dual purposes—one as a home office and the other as a gym—but can easily transform into guest rooms when family comes to visit.

Thanks to its southern exposure and strategic siting, the home meets BC Energy Step Code 4, using solar heat gain to reduce energy demands in the cooler months. Minimal excavation was needed, and the concrete foundation was scribed and doweled to follow the natural topography, preserving the site’s integrity.

The design emphasizes indoor-outdoor connection, using large expanses of glazing, flush transitions, and a seamless continuation of materials to blur the line between inside and out. To future-proof the home and support sustainable living, a rainwater harvesting system was installed, reducing reliance on potable water for outdoor use.

In response to rising construction costs, the original square footage was scaled back—but without compromising on quality or design intent. With careful planning, we retained the soul of the project while keeping it financially viable.

Site Specific Sustainability

From foundation to finish, this home was developed with a deep respect for the land it sits on. The minimized excavation and topography-following structure allowed the design to work with the landscape rather than against it. The rainwater harvesting system supports ongoing environmental stewardship, especially during dry seasons and potential future heat waves.

Interior Design

Our in-house interior design team brought the same intentionality inside. The open-plan living room is ready to flex, thanks to a cleverly designed pocket wall that transforms it into a quiet home office when needed.

Throughout the home, Marmoleum flooring was chosen for its durability and sustainability—made from natural, renewable materials, it’s as eco-conscious as it is beautiful. The interiors reflect the home’s broader ethos: smart, sustainable, and made to last.
